SIT Technician - Insect Rearing

SIT Technician

Rad Source was founded in 1997 for the purpose of creating non-gamma irradiation alternatives. Even prior to the more recent security issues associated with radioactive gamma sources, the company’s vision was to solve environmental disposal and related practical issues associated with “hot” source equipment. Rad Source irradiator solutions impact the lives of people across the world daily. From improving transplant patient outcomes, advancing cancer and cell research, or helping control populations of disease-carrying and crop-destroying insects. Located in the NE Atlanta area, Rad Source is looking to hire a team of mosquito-rearing specialists to run a high-production Aedes mosquito colony. We are looking for a rearing technician to assist in the operation and sustain colonies of Aedes mosquitoes in Gwinnett County. Those with experience in insect rearing, mosquito biology, and/or research in a life science laboratory are encouraged to apply. Mosquito and rearing experience are preferred. 

Responsibilities:

• Quickly addresses unexpected deviations and quality issues through troubleshooting.
• Work closely with manager and team to perform day-to-day operations needed to run an insectary.
• Working together with Quality & Production, you will actively contribute to the improvement of insect production processes to ensure efficient, cost-effective, high-quality insects and their timely production.
• You will receive direct guidance on production strategy decisions on an ongoing basis and will be expected to adapt to changes and communicate effectively with the rearing team.
• Operate laboratory instruments such as sex separator, larval/pupal rearing trays, x-ray, and other equipment.
• Effectively communicates results to audiences of varying expertise.
• Some weekend work required and may include the following: feeding larvae, collecting pupae, sorting pupae, creating cages, adding pupae to existing cages, inserting egg cups in cages, removing egg cups from cages, hatching eggs, and checking sugar vials in cages.

Qualifications:

• Ability to perform basic lab duties, including dishwashing, lab cleaning, and insect cage handling.
• Experience rearing mosquitoes in an insectary or working in a mosquito lab preferred. Other insect rearing or animal husbandry experience can be considered.
• Previous experience working in a research environment within a life science/biomedical lab, using standard and/or specialized equipment.
• Demonstrated problem-solving capability with high attention to detail.
